Alex’s Lemonade Stand – Fight Children’s Cancer!
I’m not sure how many of you have heard of the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, but this amazing little girl from Boston, MA, was sick with cancer when she decided to start a lemonade stand to raise money to find a cure. The idea took off and is hugely successful.

Since Alex (or Alexandra Scott) was being treated in Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP), she attended Penn Wynne School in Wynnewood, PA (right outside of Philly, where I’m based). Sadly, the little girl lost her fight with the raging beast that is cancer, but her foundation lives on. While she was alive, she managed to raise over $1 million dollars to help find a cure for childhood cancer.
Alex, whose favorite food was french fries and loved playing soccer, managed to live on as a founder of a group that is rapidly growing. An offshoot of the group, called The M&M Fund, was created by two boys who became best friends after they met in the same treatment ward (sad way to meet, but I’m still happy that they met!). Again, cancer claimed both of their terribly short lives, but their fund has also helped raise money for researching high-risk childhood cancer.
If a group has this much reach, it’s good 🙂
Let me just say, I HATE CANCER. But without the struggles that these incredible children endured, we might not have organizations like these…and it’s true: Out of struggle comes success, out of darkness comes light. I’m still struggling with that myself as I grieve my own mom, but I think part of loss is legacy, and these children’s stories are no exception.
I think as we do our best to fight for ovarian cancer and raise awareness, we need to remember that young people are affected by this disease, too. Ovarian masses have definitely been found in kids (f**k ovarian cancer), so knowing there’s a group funneling money directly into childhood cancer research is great.

Sidenote: While I was working the event today, I saw a young child, bald from his cancer treatment. He was playing basketball. Can I tell you how much that breaks my heart??? Granted, I’m so happy he’s out and about…but still. Cancer. F**k cancer. Cancer sucks.
